InStyle

InStyle has always been my favorite source of style inspiration. Even in the days of Pinterest, where you can find a million outfit ideas with the click of your mouse, I still dog-ear and sticky note my favorite pages the old fashioned way. So when InStyle named me “Reader of the Week” last week, I was completely honored! You can read the full article here, but here are a few of my favorite InStyle inspired looks…

Color Me Happy

When the skies are cloudy and grey, I try to find ways to boost my mood, like excessive shopping and wine. Kidding, I only make responsible decisions. I find little ways to boost my mood like wearing colorful denim or a fun lip shade.  I’ve had a recent affinity for colored denim, a nice and unexpected change in the winter months to brighten things up.  Green today…  purple tomorrow?  We’ll see.

The Wardrobe Dumps, Part II

The thing about the wardrobe dumps is that it really gets you motivated to clean out your closet.  After my wardrobe dump episode, I kicked it into high gear and purged a few things in my closet.  I got rid of a few dresses that I hadn’t worn in over a year and found some things I forgot about…  Like this shirt.  I totally forgot about this polka dot blouse and was inspired to pair it with denim after reading the October issue of InStyle.  So, instead of screaming “I have nothing to wear!” I actually have some pretty cute outfits to choose from…

The Wardrobe Dumps…

Do you ever get a case of the wardrobe dumps? You know, when you stare into a closet full of absolutely nothing to wear and end up in a crazed frenzy, pulling clothes off hangers while screaming “My wardrobe sucks!!” Please tell me you can relate…

This happened to me a couple weekends ago when I was getting ready for an event. I tore through my closet convinced I had nothing suitable to wear and ended up with half my wardrobe scattered across my floor, bed and dresser. It took me over an hour to repair the damage I had done to my closet in about 15 minutes. Well, whenever I get the wardrobe dumps, I know it’s time to consult my favorite fashion magazine for some styling inspiration. The October issue of InStyle is chock-full of amazing fashion inspiration and looks which I was eager to recreate from my own closet. Turns out I do have something to wear…

A slice of watermelon

As I was flipping through the July issue of InStyle, I was happy to see that they featured summer’s sweetest shade – Watermelon!  The pinkish-red hue with a punch of orange looks great on many skin tones and adds a little color pop to an outfit.  I was also excited to see that a shirtdress I recently scooped up at Banana Republic was featured on the page.  I decided to pair the dress with a khaki flower belt and tangerine shoes to make the outfit extra sweet.

Luck Be A Lady

Luck Be A Lady

Looking polished and perfectly ladylike can be easy peasy with a crisp tailored white blouse.  A white button down is a closet essential and completely versatile when creating girly and ladylike looks.

With a skirt…
Pair your white blouse with a colorful skirt and leave it untucked for a casual outfit.  Add sophistication with a chunky necklace and nude heels.
Under a dress…
Popping a crisp white shirt under a dress creates a polished and preppy look.  Add a big bag, chunky earrings and pumps to go girly.

Love to be In Style

Love to be In Style

Each month when I get my copy of InStyle in the mail, I pour over the pages looking for new outfit inspiration, trends and beauty ideas to try for myself.  I am constantly encouraged to try new color combinations and patterns and am reinventing my wardrobe with ideas inspired by the magazine.  So, when one of my looks was featured in the October 2011 issue, I was completely thrilled and shocked.  It was wonderful to feel like my passion for fashion was recognized by a publication that I love and look forward to reading.

Once again, I was delighted and humbled to be selected for the April 2012 issue showing some of my InStyle inspired looks.  Nothing is worse than not knowing what to wear at the last minute, so I always feel more confident and relaxed when I know what to wear ahead of time.  So, my sincerest thanks go out to InStyle for encouraging me to reinvent my wardrobe and recognizing my love for fashion and shoes.  J

What does “dressy casual” actually mean?  Isn’t that an oxymoron?  I keep seeing more and more women and celebrities pairing casual t-shirts with a fancy skirt to achieve a “I didn’t try too hard yet I still look fabulous” outfit.  So, I thought I would try this trend for myself.
Women’s “dressy casual” typically includes a skirt, blouse or tailored pair of pants.  It is similar to business casual, but with a bit more informality.  I recently saw a unique pairing in the March issue of InStyle – a bright, sequined and sparkly skirt with an informal chambray shirt and sweater.  Although at first glance it doesn’t seem like these items would pair well together, but they actually make for the perfect “dressy yet relaxed” look.

Maxidress: Now & Later

Maxidress: Now & Later

Most women have items in their closet that are distinctively “summer” or “winter.”  Or maybe even an entire summer wardrobe and completely separate winter wardrobe.  I try to purchase items that can work in more than one season, however it can be tricky with sundresses and shorts.  J
Before reading the February issue of InStyle, I would have never considered bringing out my black maxidress in the winter.  I have always worn it to summer cook-outs or even the pool, but the magazine so cleverly made it cold-weather appropriate that I had to try it myself.
For Winter: I added a shirt, cropped jacket, tights and grey booties to warm up the dress which made it cozy for cold days.
For Spring: I lost the layers and added a vibrant scarf and belt for the warmer days to come.
