It’s hard to believe the first month of the year is nearly over. How are those resolutions coming? I’m proud to say I stuck with my “no desserts” resolution (Ok, I ate a biscotti. But I decided that counts as breakfast) and have been focusing on joy. I tried antigravity yoga this week which was surprisingly challenging. (I’m still sore). It was fun swinging around on the silks, but holy cow it’s a great ab and arm workout. Hope your weekend is lovely!
This vibrant coat was one of my favorite finds last year and it still brightens my mood each time I wear it. We are having one of those bipolar, in-between winters where it sometimes feels impossible to dress for the day… It’s bare leg weather one morning, then thick winter coats the next. This past weekend it felt more like spring than the middle of January and I sported some boots and a raincoat. But this week we’re suppose to get snow. So I’ll just be waiting here with a large variety of coats and layers to keep me covered.
Despite fighting off illness, this first month of the year is shaping up to be pretty great. I’ve had a lot going on lately, so I’m looking forward to a low-key relaxing weekend and finishing up my second book of 2017 (I Let You Go by Clare Mackintosh). My work girlfriends and I started a little book club this year, mostly organized so that we have a standing monthly date to get together and have wine and cheese. (Heavy on the cheese). Hope your weekend is wonderful!
This past weekend was a chilly 9 degrees (no joke – If you follow me on Instagram you know I was bundled up like this) and I ended up catching a lovely winter cold. After tons of tea and Zicam, I am finally feeling semi-human again. So today is all about staying cozy and warm in colorful coats. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – Thick winter coats are my favorite because you can basically be wearing pajamas underneath and no one would be the wiser. And colorful coats just make those grey days a little brighter.
The first week of January was quite nice. I’m back to my regular routine and in productivity mode. (And I still haven’t had any sugar! I give myself 8 more days before I crack). I finished my first book of 2017, You Are a Badass. It was just the right inspiration and message I needed to start the New Year off right. (Holler if you’ve read it!) That book, combined with watching the shenanigans during the premiere of The Bachelor, makes me perfectly balanced. Hope you agree.
Let’s be real – Adjusting back to a normal schedule after the holiday rush can sometimes be a shock to the system. Although I’m feeling refreshed and inspired to make this year better than the last, sometimes you need a few pick-me-ups to avoid a post-holiday funk. Here are a few ideas to keep January fun and exciting.
One // Get organized. As a self-proclaimed neat freak, I love starting the New Year with a clean slate. Put away the Christmas décor, de-clutter a room and donate some items from your closet.
Two // Master a new recipe, or two. I’m happy to report I’m 4 days strong with my no desserts for January resolution, so there’s a win. Since I’m trying to avoid dining out this month, I’m hoping to be more diligent with meal planning and experimenting with new recipes. We just ordered our first Blue Apron delivery, so I’m looking forward to being inspired to try new meals at home.
Three // Plan something to look forward to. Sometimes it feels like a bummer when all the holiday parties are past, so January is a great time to plan a game night with friends or a little weekend getaway.
Four // Get dressed up. I’m not always ready to put away my lace, plaid or sparkly clothes after holiday festivities, so I make it a point to incorporate some favorite pieces into more casual outfits for the start of the New Year. Fancy casual.
Happy 2017, friends! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. We spent time in Columbus with friends watching the ball drop and enjoying a few too many cocktails. But now it’s time to reset and start focusing on those goals for the New Year.
Are you a resolution maker? It seems to be a polarizing question. You either make a lengthy list of resolutions for the New Year or believe they are a waste. Personally, I have always loved the idea of a fresh start, but have never been a hard and fast resolution maker. It seems like when general resolutions fail, such as “lose weight”, it’s because they are not very specific or measurable. Perhaps “lose weight” could be more attainable if it was translated into “commit to working out 4 days a week” or “do not have any sweets for 2 weeks”. Check out some more resolution inspiration from NPR.
So where did I net out? I landed on 3 key things to focus on for 2017…
One // Quit processed sugar for the month of January. After spending the last 2 weeks loading up on carbs, treats and a ton of cheese, I am taking an unprecedented dessert break for the month of January. I’m not giving up on sugar completely and still will enjoy fresh fruit, but I definitely need to step away from the brownies.
Two // Saying “no” to over thinking. So, I’m definitely an over thinker in nearly every situation. I even have a habit of analyzing my coffee order. So basically when I catch myself over thinking even the smallest things I am going to simply tell myself to “STOP IT” and know it’s not the end of the world.
Three // Joy. I’ve decided my word for the year is Joy. After going through some trying times and changes with my family this past year, I really want to focus on doing more things that bring me personal joy and also bringing joy to others and those I love.
What about you? Are you making any resolutions or big changes this year? Cheers to new beginnings!
I hope everyone had a cozy Christmas filled with love, joy and plenty of time with family and friends. I feel very fortunate to have enjoyed a warm and merry-filled few days with those I love (including plenty of wine and cheese. Mostly, cheese). It is hard to believe Christmas is already over and we are looking towards 2017. Just in case you’re still shopping those post-Christmas sales, I’ve rounded up a few of the best below.
The Nordstrom Half-Yearly Sale is happening now and there is PLENTY of good loot to scoop up. You can snag some new sneakers for the new year (I love the olive color) and some Zella leggings. (psst: I just tried my first Orange Theory work out – Is anyone a fan?!)
I wasn’t necessarily expecting a white Christmas, but we definitely got our fair share of snow over the last week. And with that I’m pulling out all my cold weather necessities… Hunter boots, turtlenecks, thick coats and lots of layers. I’ll be honest, turtlenecks weren’t really my thing up until a couple months ago and now I have this tissue turtleneck in two colors. I’ve been layering them under everything – stock up!
